One nice thing about setting up drupal was the finding that i still get referers from the xaraya module wizard. That was my first open source contribution. Well received by the community but i couldn't keep myself interested in maintaining it. As you can see i released in May 2003. And i would say i haven't maintained it longer that 3 month.
Update: As i now had 404s for the source code of the wizard: I haven't maintained that module for ages. I think i don't have the source code anymore. mikespub ( i can't remember his real name anymore ) imported the wizard into the bitkeeper repository. But xaraya now uses monotone and the bk repository is offline. I couldn't find it. So i guess that code has gone the way of the dodo.
Next Update: Here is the Xaraya Module Wizard Source Code. It looks like it is still part of the xaraya release. But it hasn't been touched for 1200 days. Let's see if i get curious enough to see if it still works.
It was a xml/xslt based module generation tool for the xaraya php framework. You could say i'm an pro in these technology. And i am. Noone writes a application of that complexity with these technolgies without proving two things.
- He has the mental power to prevail in dark times
- He mastered the technologiy
Even today i still shudder from the memories of struggling with xml and xslt to get what i wanted. A programmer has a way to see things. But xml and xslt always disagreed with my views. Always.
Things you expect to be trivial when coming from a developer background suddenly become indomitable challenges. String processing and camelcase come to my mind. Finding standard compliant processors. Whitespace handling - I didn't expect the generated code to be perfect but it was nearly impossible to keep it even readable.
Perhaps it was the wrong tool? But it was fun as long as it lasted.
